Courage to Refuse demonstrate at Rabin Memorial Rally 01/11/2003

8 years after the assassination of Itzhak Rabin, a memorial event was held at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. This traditional gathering of the Israeli peace camp over the remains of our dreams was marked by an unprecedented presence of Courage to Refuse. Over 100 members of the movement showed up, carrying signs and banners with our slogans. Hundreds of new supporters signed our support petition that evening, and over 10 new reserve soldiers have joined our movement since.

Itzhak Rabin is, for many Israelis, a symbol of the striving for peace. Over the last few years, Rabin Memorial Day has become a day of despair, on which Israeli's morn not only an assassinated leader, but also the hope for a better future.

This year, it was apparent that something different had taken place. Some 100,000 people crowded Rabin Square and the nearby streets, carrying signs of peace. Lead by peace movements such as Courage to Refuse, the demonstrators found at last hope that one day soon the bloodshed will be over, and that the Israeli- Palestinian conflict will be resolved.
